Founded in 1972, Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) is a pulp, paper, and packaging producer
headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia. APP started with humble beginnings as a caustic soda
producer and has grown into a global business with operations across Indonesia and China. A
subsidiary of Sinar Mas Group, APP has an annual converting capacity of over 20 million tons
and markets its products in more than 150 countries across six continents.
As APP continues to grow, it is guided by a vision of a better future. APP’s quality paper
products contribute to education, health and hygiene, and business development globally and
are manufactured using the highest standards of sustainability. From sourcing to production,
APP’s global operations and supply chain work to ensure that all operations have a positive
impact on the social and economic welfare of the surrounding communities while meeting
shifting needs of customers.
APP’s mission is to deliver sustainably-sourced, ethical paper products to people around the
world. This is achieved through a commitment to responsible forest and peatland management,
market-leading sustainability policies, and people-first operations.
● Product innovation: APP’s Foopak Bio Natura packaging product line provides
biodegradable and compostable paperboard for food packaging. Foopak is an award-
winning food storage option that is FDA compliant and ISEGA certified for compostability
● Commitment to natural resources: APP aims to protect and reinvigorate the world’s
most precious natural resources by working closely with partners and stakeholders to
develop effective programs and best practices.
● Improving lives: APP strives to advance the lives of local and indigenous communities
through community empowerment programs that deliver long-term and sustainable
livelihood improvements.
Eka Tjipta Widjaja founded APP in 1972 as a caustic soda producer. It’s first paper mill, Tjiwi
Kimia, started production in 1978. Located in Sidoarjo, Indonesia, Tjiwi Kimia is now one of the
world’s largest stationery manufacturers with an annual production capacity of over 1.2 million
tons. The plant manufacturers essential items for schools and offices, including stationery,
notebooks, file folders, and more.
As the global demand for paper continues to grow, so too does APP’s operations. The quality
pulp, paper, and packaging products that APP produces are sustainably sourced and made
from post-consumer waste.
APP currently has ten pulp and paper mills located throughout Indonesia:
● Indah Kiat Perawang
● Pindo Deli Perawang
● Univenus Perawang
● Lontar Papyrus
● Indah Kiat Serang
● Indah Kiat Tangerang
● Pindo Deli Karawang
● Tjiwi Kimia
● Ekamas Fortuna
● OKI
APP is committed to a people-first strategy that ensures the health and well-being of its
employees and the local communities in which it operates. It is a significant employer in the pulp
and paper industry, with more than 30,000 employees globally, in locations such as Indonesia,
China, India, and more. By investing in employees and local communities, APP is able to
protect and improve the lives of people who may not have otherwise had the opportunity for
growth and development.
Sustainability is a priority throughout APP’s production process. APP’s operations are growing
and changing to effect positive change by using responsibly sourced, renewable, and recycled
fiber, using high-efficiency mills, and more.
In order to document and track its sustainability achievements, APP launched a Sustainability
Roadmap in June 2012 and a Forest Conservation Policy in February 2013. These company
policies work together to improve environmental performance, biodiversity conservation,
and protection of community rights.
The Sustainability Roadmap includes 10 key focuses:
The Sustainability Roadmap has resulted in the following successes:
● 54 percent of energy is generated from renewable fuels.
● APP reused, recycled or recovered over 487,802 tons (32 percent) of waste in 2018.
● Fiber sourcing is 100 percent sustainable plantation wood for pulp.
● Reduced carbon, energy, and water intensity
● All mills operate at least 10 percent below national limits for COD and BOD.
● 41 percent reduction in solid waste to landfill, based on 2010 baseline.
● APP supports the protection and restoration of natural forest inside APP pulpwood suppliers’ concession and outside concession through landscape approach.
● Created dedicated conservation programs focused on “umbrella species” of Orangutan, Elephant, and Tiger conservation, with the support of NGOs and conservation specialists.
● Extended additional protection of indigenous people’s customary rights in the forest.
